Riverside County SELPA is committed to providing Professional Learning opportunities that meet the unique needs of each of our member Local Education Agencies (LEAs). We strive to hold SELPA wide Professional Learning events, as well as, sessions designed specifically for each LEA.

This course, hosted by RC SELPA, prepares participants to assess students with complex communication needs who may benefit from augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Through in-person and online sessions and guided coaching, participants will complete an AAC assessment using a class-provided template. Upon successful completion, they will earn a 45-hour certificate. Optional 3.0 Graduate Level PDUs are available for an additional fee. (Note: This course does not cover assistive technology.)

Participants explore how to align goals with state standards, develop meaningful baselines, and write goals that address academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and functional needs.

PARTICIPANTS WILL: Define Motivational Interviewing and its theoretical foundations (e.g., student-centered, collaborative approach). Describe the four processes of MI: Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, and Planning. Explain the principles of MI, including expressing empathy, developing discrepancy, rolling with resistance, and supporting self-efficacy. Identify change talk vs. sustain talk and recognize their importance in behavior change. Understand the OARS communication skills: Open questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening, and Summarizing. Identify the Deliverance of Motivational Interviewing in the School Setting. Demonstrate respect for diverse motivations and readiness to change.

This professional development session focuses on writing linguistically appropriate goals (LAGOS) within the IEP process to support English learners with disabilities (ELSWD). Participants explore how to align goals with California English Language Development (ELD) Standards and ELPAC performance levels while addressing each student’s individual disability-related needs.

We encourage LEA Data Teams to attend with their CALPADS Technicians, SEIS Technicians, and Special Education Administrators. These workshops are offered at no cost for RC SELPA Member LEAs.
